For both the experienced and aspiring golfer, Southfield Golf Club offers challenging golf, superb facilities, excellent hospitality, wonderful scenery and the warmest of welcomes. Originally formed in 1875 by university graduates, the club has developed over the years to become a popular and respected golf venue. A range of super-value membership options are available including 7-day, 5-day, junior, student, country and social.
The undulating parkland course, which features many beautiful mature trees, also contains a wonderful abundance of wildlife. A challenging test for golfers at all-level, the course is reputed to be one of the finest in Oxfordshire. Constructed in the 1920’s by Harry Colt, the course is home to three long-established clubs; Oxford City Golf Club, Oxford Ladies Golf Club and Oxford University Golf Club.
In addition to the great golfing facilities, which include a well-stocked Pro-Shop, the clubhouse offers a family-friendly oasis of relaxation for members, their guests and visitors. Societies and organisations are also assured of the best attention in planning golf days or special events.
The Clubhouse In the clubhouse at Southfield Golf Club, you can rely on a reliable, courteous, efficient and timely service from the friendly and highly competent staff.
Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere in the open-plan lounge which overlooks the putting green and 18th hole. The bar offers an excellent selection of wines, spirits and fine beers, including guest brands all at very reasonable prices.
Whilst the club has a modern outlook, embracing new ideas and all age groups, it has a proud tradition exemplified by the past golfing legends that adorn the walls of the foyer including J.H Taylor of Mid-Surrey, Henry Cotton, Arthur Havers and the Whitcombes. Their faces bring back memories of great characters from the past.
The Course In addition to fine, challenging golf, the undulating parkland course at Southfield Golf Club offers superlative views of historic Oxford and the beautiful countryside. Built mainly on sand, the course is extremely well-drained thus facilitating excellent conditions all year round.
Having arrived at the fourth tee, breathe the country air before turning to view the splendid and inspiring panorama of Oxford’s “dreaming spires” beyond. Silhouetted on the skyline are Magdalen’s four-pinnacled Tower, the University Church Spire and the dome of the Radcliffe Camera.
From the fifth, the only existing hole from the original course, you can see the headquarters of the Old Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, its battlements and castellations now missing and converted into flats. The 208 yard par-3 12th was thought by renowned TV Commentator, Henry Longhurst, to be “one of the best holes in English golf.”
Senses filled with a sharpened sense of history, take a well struck drive over the Lye Valley to the 13th hole. Beyond, the challenging par-4 16th with a short and tricky 17th to follow. At the 476 yard par-5 final hole, big hitters have the prospect of a birdie and if not immortality, a drink in the bar!
